Where water leaves a pool, and how each spot gets tested

A leak can sit in the shell, a fitting, the plumbing under the deck or the spa that shares the water. We test them in order, so nobody digs until we know where.

NAUI-certified SCUBA inspection

Every kind of pool, one way of finding the leak

Standard, infinity edge, custom and commercial pools all go through the same process: confirm the loss, inspect the basin, pressure test, listen, then report.

Standard Pools & Spas

Rectangular in-ground pool with a diving board and a concrete deck, a lake and pool house behind

Residential in-ground pools

Backyard pools and the spas that share their water. Liner punctures and simple epoxy and vinyl repairs found on the visit are patched then, at no additional charge.

Infinity Edge Pools & Spas

Dark infinity edge pool and raised spa on a paver deck, looking out over a lake

Vanishing edge and catch basin

An infinity edge spills water by design, which hides a real leak. We measure the loss against the day's evaporation, then pressure test the whole plumbing system, catch basin lines included.

Custom Pools & Spas

Custom gunite pool in Powdersville, SC with a rock waterfall spilling into it beside a raised spa

Rock work, waterfalls, raised spas

Waterfalls, raised spas and rock work add plumbing nobody can see. Every line gets pressure tested and the shell gets a dive before anyone talks about pulling rock.

The Aquatrace Promise

No Find, Full Refund.

If your swimming pool is losing half an inch or more of water daily, without a heater in operation, and our team fails to locate the source of the water loss, you get a refund for the service.

If the pool keeps losing water after the first assessment, we reserve the right to a no-cost revisit, for example to run evaporation tests. And separately from the refund: when we arrive, if a leak is present in your system, we will find it.

2 in.

A week. That is the rule of thumb: if you are adding more than two inches of water a week, you may have a leak.

Check your own pool first

What a find looks like

“The next day I dug the area and found breaks in both lines EXACTLY where he said they would be, I was blown away at the accuracy!!”

David Savino, Google review. Aquatrace holds 4.9 from 57 Google reviews.

“Great company! Chris fit me in a couple days after we spoke and was able to find my leak pretty quickly. I had been looking for it a while without luck. Highly recommend these guys!”Kyle Brookshire, Google review

From the waterline down: the order we work a leak

Some leak detection companies outsource the work, and some are simply not equipped to go into the water. We do both halves ourselves: the plumbing above the waterline and the shell below it.

The full process
  1. On the deck

    Equipment

Acoustic listening devices, pressure testing gear, water level sensing equipment, electronic basin testing, dye, and the SCUBA kit.

  2. At the waterline

    Water loss confirmation

A baseline measurement against the day's evaporation index, and a final one after testing and repairs. The loss is measured, not guessed.

  3. On the floor

    Reservoir inspection

The pool and spa basin, inspected from the deck and, when the shell needs it, from underwater with photographs. Did we mention SCUBA? Yep! That too! Chris is a NAUI scuba instructor, and Catherine is NAUI certified.

  4. In the lines

    Pressure testing

The filtration system and then the entire plumbing system, put under pressure line by line until one of them will not hold.

  5. Under the deck

    Audible survey

Listening to the problem. Water, air and specialized listening devices trace the underground plumbing beneath your decking, so you dig in one spot instead of tearing up the whole deck.

  6. In your inbox

    The findings

A digital copy of the findings report, emailed after the inspection. Simple epoxy and vinyl repairs are done on the spot at no additional charge.

Leak, evaporation, cost and the refund

Rates depend on the type of pool, so we do not publish a price list. A short phone consultation gets you a real number.

All questions

A rule of thumb: if you are adding more than two inches of water a week, you may have a leak. Other signs are a constant need to refill, excessive chemical use, unexplained drops in the water level, wet spots in the yard or near the pool deck, and air in the pump or visible cracks.

Our rates vary based on the type of swimming pool you have, so a phone consultation is required before we can quote. Fees are due at the time of service. Card payments are welcome and may incur an additional fee.

If your swimming pool is losing half an inch or more of water daily, without a heater in operation, and our team fails to locate the source of the water loss, you receive a refund for the service. When we arrive at your pool to provide the leak detection service, if a leak is present in your system, we will find it. Leaks that start after our visit are not covered.

Yes and no. Simple epoxy and vinyl repairs are included at no additional charge with the service fee. For major repairs we consult with you and recommend the most cost-effective solution, and we will usually point you back to your original pool contractor for that work.

Covers removed, the pool and spa clean and balanced, the water at its normal operating level, and the areas we need to inspect free from obstructions.
